What is York in Recovery?

York in Recovery (YiR) is a group of people drawn from the community working to the common aim of promoting abstinence and visible recovery from drug & alcohol addiction in the City of York.

“Together we are building a strong peer led voice for personal recovery in York.A This will improve treatment and develop recovery support in the community.”

TheAconsortiumAis made up of people who live in York, have lived experience of recovery, support people who are in Recovery or who work in the substance misuse field.

York in Recovery is not a charity or delivery service, it is the name given to the group of charities, service providers and individuals working together to develop a supportive Recovery Community in York.

From the research we know that treatment services and professional interventions can and do support people on their individual recovery journeys.

Recovery focused treatment interventions initiate excellent recovery journeys.

Recovery focused treatment agencies working hand in hand, respectfully, with mutual aid and other independent recovery support groups increase recovery outcomes for individuals in treatment with addiction problems. Such professional agencies, in partnership with these recovery support groups can also help build individualsa capacity to establish and sustain long- term recovery from addiction in the community.

Recovery orientated systems of care are built by using the same principles that underpin a successful individual recovery journey.A In all areas of recovery transformations, how we approach our work is as important as the work we do. Recovery transformations are greatly aided by open, participative, engaging processes and tools.

Larger scale recovery from addiction involves culture change.A It requires particularly that the attitudes, values and practices that exist in our culture that support addiction are challenged. One strong contribution to this culture change is to realise the assets to the whole community that long-term recovery brings.

By working together under the umbrella of York in Recovery our aim is the develop the assets in our City to realise the long term commitment to Recovery here in York.

York in Recovery hold forum meetings every six weeks. For more information on its members please click here: YiR Forum Members
